The Strangest Laws Around the World

If you have ever been travelling around the world, then you may have found that each country has some bizarre etiquette, culture and even laws. What is deemed as rude in one place is actually polite in another, and what is commonplace back home may be against the law abroad. There are some extremely strange laws around the world, here are just a few of them.

United States of America

Some states in America have some rather bizarre laws, which have been around for centuries. Even though they may seem completely outdated, most of these are still enforced around the U.S. Here are some of the best:

  • Miami – It’s illegal to imitate an animal in Miami, so keep those farmyard noises and gorilla costumes to yourself. It’s also illegal to use a skateboard in a police station; although who thinks it’s a good idea to do this anyway?

  • Chicago – There is a law that states you cannot eat in a place that is on fire. Although this law may seem like common sense, it’s actually a punishable offence. If you thought about finishing that burger before evacuating a burning building, then think again.

  • Texas – This state is renowned for some of the most bizarre laws in the world. Here it is illegal to threaten someone with an unloaded gun! You best carry out some bulk ammo if you’re going to visit the Lone Star State. You are also required to give 24 hours notice to the police if you’re planning on committing a crime. Handy!

Although not especially known for having odd laws, you may be surprised about what you can, and cannot, do in Australia. Here are some things to make sure you avoid:

  • It is illegal to change a lightbulb in your own home here. Instead, you must invest in the services of a licensed electrician to do it for you. “How many Australians does it take to change a lightbulb…?”

  • You are not allowed to walk around in black clothes with felt shoes and black shoe polish on your face. Why? Well, because this is the outfit of a cat burglar, obviously.

  • If you’re planning to swim on Brighton Beach then you need a neck to knee swimsuit on; otherwise it is illegal.

Finally, we come to Europe. A civilized place that would never consider keeping on the strange laws from centuries ago, right? Wrong.

  • UK – It is completely legal to shoot a Scotsman with a bow and arrow, unless it is a Sunday. It’s also illegal for women to eat chocolate on public transport. Oh, and politicians aren’t allowed to wear armour in Parliament. All useful laws then.

  • Germany – A pillow can be considered as a ‘passive’ weapon, so we’re assuming pillow fights are illegal in Germany! It’s also illegal to wear a mask and run out of petrol on the Autobahn. One strange, but nice, law is that all offices must have a view of the sky.

  • Denmark – It’s not illegal to try and escape from prison in Denmark, however, if you’re caught then you have to finish your prison term. As you would anyway, surely? It’s also illegal to start a car when someone is underneath it and to not honk your horn before starting your car. We wonder where the term ‘Crazy Danes’ comes from.

These are just some of the strangest laws around the world, although there are hundreds more. You’ll find that many of these aren’t actually enforced, but it’s always worth checking before you end up in a foreign prison!
